This past weekend, it took a World War II training plane and a cold-weather flight, but it was well worth the time and effort. Kevin Conaway, a former Ottumwan, and his friend, pilot Chris Goodrich, have a special affection for Graham's ice cream, as Conaway grew up with it, and his parents, Kerry and Kathleen, bring it to them in Omaha on every trip. "It grew out of a casual comment," Conaway said. "I just mentioned this winter that it would be kind of fun, when Graham's opens back up, that we'd just fly back and get some. Then we made it a trip and planned it all out. The trip was originally scheduled for March 21, but a mechanical issue forced them to postpone two weeks. It was actually a blessing, they said, because it was significantly colder then than it was this past weekend. The Fairchild PT-19A, which stands for Primary Trainer, was accepted into the Army Air Corps on Oct. 31, 1941. At that time, its total cost was just $9,718. Its assignments then included Randolf AAF, Texas; Stamford, Texas; and the 2534th AAF Base Unit. It served most of its life assigned to the 308th Elementary Flying Training Detachment, the 31st Flying Training Wing. "If you have the serial number, they kept all the records. Personnel records are harder to find," he said, making it difficult to tell who exactly would have flown this plane. "They know what bases it was at and what units were there, so you can make some assumptions. There were more than 3,000 PT-19s built for the war effort, but now fewer than 90 remain in flying condition worldwide. The plane was sold as surplus in October 1944 and was restored to flying condition in 1996. It is now owned by an association in Tarkio, Mo., where the two flew out from Saturday. H. Wade Minter ’97 waits out the closing moments of TribeHacks on March 30. Minter, the chief technology officer of TeamSnap, came to William & Mary’s first hackathon as a judge and as a sponsor. College-age coders hammered out apps over 24 straight hours in Swem Library. H. Wade Minter, the chief technology officer at a company that provides web and mobile services to five million users, stood in Swem Library, looked out upon the frantic final minutes of William & Mary’s first 24-hour hackathon and talked about the influence of the liberal arts on computer science. “One of the things that make William & Mary’s computer science program unique is that because it’s a relatively small program, you can’t just immerse yourself in technology like you can at a larger engineering school,” said Minter, whose company, TeamSnap, offers mobile and web tools to manage recreational sports teams. “Plus, William & Mary pushes you to take classes outside pure science and technology,” he said. “You have to take English classes. You have to take history classes. Minter is in an excellent position to know. He’s a 1997 graduate of William & Mary’s computer science program. He was on campus for the university’s first entry into the 24-hour computer coding sprees known as hackathons. Minter had a dual role at TribeHacks, signing up as a corporate sponsor and serving as a judge for the apps upon which hackers had hammered for 24 straight hours in Swem Library. Plus, he said, the scene at TribeHacks was just plain interesting. “One of the things that’s most interesting to me, as a computer science graduate from here, is seeing how the next generation of computer science graduates of William & Mary are approaching the technological issues of today,” Minter said. Joe Soultanis ’15, a computer science student at William & Mary, was the driving force behind TribeHacks, held March 29-30. He explained that the idea of a hackathon was to produce the coolest piece of software possible in 24 hours. Everyone involved in TribeHacks pronounced it a success. Well, there was one hardware glitch: the mammoth takeout order from Chipotle arrived sans forks. “We had around 100 people,” said Hareesh Nagaraj ’15, one of the TribeHacks organizers. “That’s pretty good for the first year. Next year will be looking really good. TribeHacks, even in its first year, gained recognition by Major League Hacking, the umbrella organization of the college hackathon phenomenon. A hackathon combines collaborative and competitive elements. The apps produced at TribeHacks were judged and the best efforts won prizes awarded at the closing expo. TribeHacks was open to all college computing students and, through corporate sponsors, the organizers were able to defray travel costs for at least some attendees. Sponsors like Minter speak at the hackathon’s opening expos about their need for apps that would add functionality to their company’s own products. In the case of TeamSnap, which, offers mobile and web tools to manage recreational sports teams, Minter came to TribeHacks with a suggestion for an API—application programming interface—that would allow a baseball or softball manager to print out a batting order. “As a sponsor, you want to see people doing something with your application, as opposed to just some random cool thing,” he said. But, he noted, one never knows what’s going to happen at a hackathon, which often act as timed convection ovens for the finishing of existing ideas. Hackathon participants usually work in teams on a project. Novice hackers are welcome and even accommodated; there was a table for the “noobs” to learn coding elements. Rob Dickerson, visiting assistant professor of computer science at William & Mary, conducted workshops and rendered assistance during the event. He admitted being a noob himself; TribeHacks was his very first hackathon. Dickerson said he was gratified to see students from his Data Structures course—mostly first- and second-year students—as well as people from his Mobile Cloud Computing class, a course that focuses on smartphone apps that harness the Cloud. “I think that hackathons really fill a gap in computer science education. What we teach in the formal courses is important; we lay the groundwork for the theory of computer science,” Dickerson said. “However, hackathons allow the students to be creative and actively apply that knowledge they learned in and a fun and competitive way. TribeHacks was enriched by a bunch of cool hardware on loan, most of it from the new Makerspace in Small Hall, home of William & Mary’s Department of Physics. There was a group from Christopher Newport University using a set of Oculus Rift virtual reality goggles to enhance a video game. Raspberry Pi boxes—small computers that add functionality—were in great demand. On Wednesday, three days after TribeHacks, Soultanis was still trying to get caught up on sleep, as his first hackathon was overlapping with regular class requirements. (“I had a CS project and a take-home Quantum midterm due today.”) But, despite the sleep deficit, Soultanis seemed buoyed by the outcome of TribeHacks. “Overall I was very impressed with our participants. I think the students really enjoyed seeing a different style of computer science and were excited to learn more about app development,” he said. “The apps turned out great! In the future I can only see this event getting bigger and better, and I'm glad we had such a great first experience to launch us forward. UglyMouse: Sami Mirimiri and Garrett Klausner (William & Mary ’14): The app allows you to control the cursor on a remote computer by using your mobile phone. Your phone can be tilted from side-to-side to move the mouse around. You can click using the touchscreen. You can also select text from the remote computer and have the text arrive on your phone. The team was able to automatically dial and call a phone number if that text contains a phone number string. GifJam: Joe Acosta (William & Mary) and Aaron Roe (Rice University): Allows a user to record a short (5-second) clip with a smartphone's camera; the video is then sent to the Cloud and converted into an animated gif. This gif is registered to your account, you can share it with friends using Facebook, in emails and text messages. You can also "thumbs up" the gifs you like. Huddle: Caleb Severn, Daniel Park, Kevin Ko (William & Mary ’16): Most students use Swem library for studying. This app allows a student to enter Swem Library and enter a course they are enrolled in. Afterwards, the locations for all the other students in the class appear on a map. You can use the app to find a study group. The app is based on Google maps, so it will work outside of Swem as well. William & Mary hosts a wide variety of outreach programs to develop both interest and skills in STEM subjects. More... Led by large pension funds such as the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System and the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, shareholders sued Bank of America for a litany of sins. Not least among them was a claim that the bank had a "secret agreement" to permit Merrill Lynch -- a near-bankrupt stockbroker that Bank of America agreed to buy in the depths of the financial crisis -- to pay its executives up to $5.8 billion in bonuses prior to getting bought. Considering that Merrill racked up more than $15 billion in losses while under these executives' control and that Bank of America itself lost a bundle in the housing market meltdown, Bank of America shareholders were understandably upset. They especially didn't like the fact that Bank of America stock, in the words of the website dedicated to the lawsuit, "plummeted from $12.99 per share to a low of $5.10 per share, causing a market capitalization loss of approximately $50 billion" after these losses were revealed. Open Mouth, Insert Foot, Shoot Self in Foot According to Reuters , what are known as securities class action lawsuits are regaining popularity among investors looking for someone to blame when their investments go south. After peaking during the period of investor outrage over the financial crisis several years ago and declining since, such lawsuits are growing again -- up 9 percent year over year in 2013 to 166 lawsuits filed. But a new report out of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Institute for Legal Reform suggests that the shareholders who participate in such lawsuits may be making a costly mistake. As the institute explains, securities class action lawsuits, such as the one Bank of America shareholders filed, cost investors nearly $39 billion per year by driving down the stock prices of the companies sued, but the compensation that investors get from suing their companies is only $5 billion. Now, $5 billion is a whole lot more than the aggrieved shareholders of Bank of America may wind up receiving. According to the terms of their settlement agreement with the bank, the "$50 billion" in market capitalization that plaintiffs alleged was lost will be compensated with a settlement amount of just $2.4 billion. That's less than a nickel for each dollar of losses the investors suffered. Back to Square One That doesn't sound very fair to the investors. But really, they have no one but themselves to blame. According to the institute's study, the instant investors set out to sue a company for stock market losses, the stock loses 4.4 percent of its market cap on average. That 4.4 percent loss of market cap is almost equal to the 4.8 percent settlement amount that Bank of America shareholders, for example, will win from their litigation. Put another way, the end result of shareholders suing their company to recover losses is years of litigation, followed by a refund of only those losses the shareholder incurred by filing the lawsuit. Who Profits? Shareholders, as we've seen, lose twice from securities class action lawsuits: First, when the stock goes down due to malfeasance by the company they invested in. So who profits? The lawyers who file the suits. They suffered nothing from the stock's decline (because they never owned it), and they collect an average of 18 percent of any legal settlement as their fee. And of course, this comes out of the money that would otherwise have gone to the shareholders. The Moral of the Story When a company gets caught doing something underhanded, and it gets sued, some investors' natural instinct is to do two things: First, sue. Second, sell the stock so that if they win the lawsuit, they won't own the company that has to pay for the loss. The study proves that this is generally a self-defeating strategy. A better strategy? Unless the company's business is in real shambles, stick around as it fixes its business -- or buy more shares. After all, while Bank of America's former shareholders may win a few pennies on the dollar from their lawsuit against the company, shareholders who stuck out the crisis are today sitting on more than a 200 percent profit off the $5.10 share price that Bank of America hit during the crisis. Cage in a rage. It's been 5 million years since humanity hauled itself from the swamp, and according to Joe director David Gordon Green, we're devolving back into muck. While the stoners of Green's Pineapple Express regressed from men to boys after a few puffs of weed, this grimly beautiful drama starring Nicholas Cage makes mankind's progress feel even hazier and more hopeless, as though we might as well grab our weapons and retreat to our caves. Joe is Cage's periodic reminder that he's one of his generation's great talents.Our setting is rural Texas, that stretch where there's nothing but scrub brush and wasted space. The resources that matter — money and respect — are so scarce that men fight one another for a larger share. (Women, at least, are plentiful. This hard land has ground down their hope, making them desperate and cheap.) For extra gloom, the film tosses in frequent thunderstorms, yet none of the characters has the foresight to own an umbrella. However, most do own attack dogs that function as snarling, snapping extensions of their own fear. One of Green's wry running jokes is that every home visit begins with an apology for the growls. Cage plays Joe, an ordinary name for an ordinary-looking man who becomes more complex with every scene. He's the boss of a small-time unit hired to poison the trees on a land baron's acreage — in a cynical loophole, the lumber company isn't allowed to cut down the trees unless they're already dying. Justifies Joe: "They're weak, not good for anything. Starring Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan, Gary Poulter, Ronnie Gene Blevins, and Brian Mays. Directed by David Gordon Green. Written by Gary Hawkins. Rated R.It's a metaphorical job, the sort that Samuel Beckett might have dreamed up for the stage, but to Joe and his half-dozen men, it's an honest living. When they drive into town for hookers and beer, at least they know they came by their cash squarely. There are some men there who don't, like the drunk (Gary Poulter) who steals from his hard-working 15-year-old son, Gary (Tye Sheridan of Tree of Life), which is the sort of dour business that Joe is content to ignore as long as he can, even though the boy is one of his best employees. When Joe stops ignoring things, he gets into too much trouble. Lots of movies have characters like Joe, guys with a shady past and a skewed moral code. Cage has played several himself. A more conventional actor would make him a hardass who never lets down his guard. Cage makes him compelling. You might expect Cage to break out his patented strange, to do that Cage thing filmmakers have been hiring him for as though their greatest goal is a couple viral GIFs. He's been in on the joke, signing onto movies he must know are worthless and then simply amusing himself. But Joe is Cage's periodic reminder that he's one of his generation's great talents. Perhaps he's reminding himself. Here, Cage feels rooted to the ground. His pecs are bigger, his footfalls feel heavier, his smile, rare as it is, feels real. He delivers great lines without leaning on a lunatic leer, and every time you expect him to explode, he keeps the performance in check. Which means when Joe does do crazy things, like grab a cottonmouth snake, try to outrun a cop, or make an angry five-minute pit stop at a whorehouse, we're genuinely unnerved. As in Leaving Las Vegas, the role that won him an Oscar, Cage is again playing an alcoholic. Joe's drinking, like everyone else's in town, goes unacknowledged. Again and again, these hair-trigger, pride-hungry men collide without the safety of sober self-control. In one fight, Joe screams at the bartender to call the cops, but it's to protect the other guy from himself. Perhaps Joe suspects he's surpassed his life expectancy, which in caveman years he has. When the girl he's sleeping with asks if they have a future, he sighs, "I like you too, but what's the point of it." He's more interested in seeding his wisdom in teenage Gary so the next generation will know how to be men. One lesson is that women love fancy lighters. Another is a soliloquy about grit and survival. "Every day they hurt," says Joe of the workers he employs. "There's no frontier anymore. Joe is a miserably perfect portrait of a culture on the brink of collapse. Green found his supporting cast on the street, a stunt justified by the fact that they can actually act. Joe's laborers are actual laborers, and his second-in-command, the wonderfully mush-mouthed Brian Mays, was found at a barbecue restaurant. The wild-haired Poulter, making a phenomenal debut as Gary's abusive drifter dad, was a homeless man Green's casting director discovered at an Austin bus stop. He's fantastic. If only Poulter had lived long enough to hear it — he drowned in a river two months after the film wrapped. On camera, Poulter is one of the villains of the film. In life, and in death, he's its conscience. Green and Cage capture the self-inflicted hardships of these suffering men. By his own example, Poulter makes us care. The Boone County Landfill will begin accepting yard waste for its Annual Spring Yard Waste Days on April 15. The bi-annual free program, which is also held in the fall, will continue until May 31 at the landfill, located off Montana Road, which is west of Boone. “The program is nice and mature,” said Scott Smith, landfill administrator. “Our yard waste attendant, Richard Duffy, will be out there. “It’s very popular,” he continued. “We do an average 600 tons every year (spring and fall). Last fall we took in 1758 individual loads. In the spring of 2013, it was 934 loads. It’s usually less in the spring. “The record,” he added, “was 113 loads in three hours on a Saturday morning several years ago. And people were not waiting in line much longer than five minutes. The landfill, located at 1268 224th Lane in Boone, will accept yard waste from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays. Smith noted the landfill will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday on May 26. The “tipping fees,” or load-weight fees, are calculated by estimating cubic yardage during the spring and fall programs, he said. Residential yard waste accepted by the landfill includes grass clippings, leaves, weeds, brush, branches, limbs and plant or vegetable waste that is not considered food waste and is collected by residents during routine yard maintenance. Only residents that live within the landfill’s service area are eligible for the program. The service area includes Boone County, except Sheldahl; Greene County, except Jefferson; and the cities of Bouton, Woodward, Granger, Somers, Farnhamville and Lohrville. All truck loads must be covered with a tarp even if the waste is in bags or boxes. The tarps help prevent litter from flying from trucks onto streets and roads. The only exception is brush that can be securely tied. All trucks and trailers must have tailgates. Anyone bringing in a truckload without a tarp will be charged $10 for each load. The yard waste facility will not take lumber, lattice, landscape timbers, bricks, rocks or stones, wire, uncut trees, stumps, animal bedding, baled hay or straw, plastic, paper, bags, litter, ashes, garbage or any land-clearing, demolition or construction waste. Leaving waste at the facility before or after business hours is considered illegal dumping and violators will be fined. The landfill’s yard waste processing facility is open March 1 through Nov. 30. Smith suggested that backyard composting can be an alternative to yard waste disposal. “Lots of people might not know how easy it is to compost,” he said. The alternatives include mulching grass clippings, chipping brush and leaves or composting yard waste in the backyard. Home composting eliminates disposal costs and creates soil-like product that can be used in gardens, flower beds and landscaping, according to Smith. Compost can also help with soil erosion and help protect plants through hot and dry or cold and dry weather conditions. The landfill staff is available to answer any questions about home composting. David Bar Katz is a member of The LAByrinth Theater Company which produced his plays Philip Roth in Khartoum (at The Public Theater) and The Atmosphere of Memory (starring Ellen Burstyn) and has presented six of his plays in their annual Barn Series Festival. Katz co-wrote and directed the Broadway show, FREAK, which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play and Katz was nominated for an Emmy Award for the HBO production. He co-created and was a head writer for FOX TV’s, House of Buggin', the first all-Latino network television show. Katz’s play The History of Invulnerability premiered at The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park where it received the Acclaim Award for Outstanding Play of the Year, the Cincinnati Entertainment Award for Outstanding Premiere and won the American Theater Critics Association Citation as one of the top three American plays of 2010. Katz is currently writing The Man in the Rockefeller Suit for Fox Searchlight to be directed by Walter Salles and creating a new series for the Sundance Channel based on the life of rocket inventor and occultist, Jack Parsons. Next season Philip Roth in Khartoum will premiere on London’s West End, directed by Jeff Calhoun. This play is dedicated to Jerry Siegel and the courageous men and women of the Birkenau Sonderkommando uprising of October 7th, 1944. "The size of conventional plants is more often constrained by the power output of rotating equipment," Cothran said. "Modular plants, however, are more often constrained by transportation limits. With so many fabrication facilities using advanced dockside loading technologies, constraints in transporting modules to plant sites are improving rapidly. Quinsam participated in the recent new issue at $2.25/unit by Nuvo Research Inc. ("NRI"). NRI is a life science company that has both products on the market generating significant revenue and cash flow and also an important new product in advanced clinical trials. We think that each of these elements could easily justify the price we paid for our investment. NRI's marketed products include Pennsaid (a topical treatment for the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee), Pennsaid 2% (a topical treatment for the pain of osteoarthritis of the knee), Pliaglis (a topical local anesthetic) and the heated lidocaine/tetracaine patch (HLT Patch). We also purchased shares in Kane Biotech Inc. ("KNE"). Kane is developing a suite of animal health products. The products are generally based on antibiofilm and antimicrobial technology and partnership discussions are in progress. KNE is also exploring technology applications outside of the veterinary market. Additionally, we purchased shares in TIO Networks Corp. (TSX VENTURE:TNC). Tio Networks is a Canadian based payment processor with operations in North America and the Caribbean. TNC recently closed the acquisition of Globex Financial Services and reported earnings that included one month of Globex revenue indicating much improved profitability and renewed organic growth. Quinsam would also like to take this opportunity to update investors on the Company's recent performance. As at the end of March 2014, the unaudited total value of the Quinsam's cash and equity investments was approximately $1.8 million, compared with a value of $982,000 at the end of February 2014. The growth in the portfolio was due to the completion of the previously announced private placement. Small cap markets suffered some softness in the last part of March and overall investment performance in March was modestly negative after a strong February. The losses were more than offset by gains in the first few days of April. Roger Dent stated, "We continue to be pleased with our overall investment performance to date. While March was not a great month overall for small caps, we attribute this to a normal correction after several strong months plus a relative absence of news due to the annual earnings reporting cycle.
